Essential Spring Dock Maintenance Tips: Get Ready for Summer

Updated: May 31

How to prepare your dock for summer

ree

The ice has melted, and the temperature is rising; it's time to get your dock ready for another season on the water. Whether your dock is fixed, floating, or modular, regular spring maintenance is key to keeping it safe, functional, and looking great all summer long.

Here are some essential tips to help you spot problems early and make sure your dock is good to go:

Tip #1 - Inspect the Wood Structure

Start with a thorough visual check of the entire dock. Look closely for signs of rot, especially around the waterline, where moisture is most persistent. Soft or discoloured wood can indicate trouble beneath the surface, and it's much easier (and cheaper) to repair or replace early.

Tip #2 - Check All Hardware and Metal Components

Let’s face it—living in Atlantic Canada comes with its fair share of rust. That’s why it’s important to inspect all metal parts of your dock regularly. Look for excessive rust, corrosion, or looseness in:

  • Bolts

  • Cleats

  • Brackets

  • Railings

  • Chains

If anything feels unstable or compromised, replace it sooner rather than later to avoid bigger problems mid-season.

Tip #3 - Examine Boards and Decking

Walk the length of your dock and check for loose or damaged boards. Over time, fasteners can loosen, and boards can warp or crack due to exposure to the elements. Secure or replace any problem areas to help prevent trips, snags, or worse.

Tip #4 - Test Stairs, Ramps, and Railings

If your dock includes stairs, ramps, or railings, give them a solid shake to ensure everything is still secure. Winter storms and freeze-thaw cycles can loosen connections or warp materials. Safety first!

Tip #5 - Assess Pilings (For Fixed Docks)

For fixed docks, your pilings take a beating—especially in East Coast winters. Pack ice and freezing water can cause major damage. Look for:

  • Splitting or cracking

  • Shifting or leaning

  • Loose anchoring

If anything seems off, it’s best to bring in a professional to assess the structural integrity.

Tip #6 - Inspect Mooring Chains and Anchors (For Floating Docks)

Floating docks rely on mooring chains and anchor systems to stay in place. Spring is the perfect time to:

  • Check for broken or stretched links

  • Confirm the chains are still securely attached

  • Look for signs that the dock may have shifted or lifted due to winter ice

Don’t underestimate what ice can do—it’s been known to move docks right out of place.

Tip #7 - Maintain Plastic Modular Floating Docks

Although modular floating docks are low-maintenance and easier to maintain, spring maintenance is still important—there are a few things to check over before putting them back in the water.

  • Inspect plastic components for cracks, dents, or punctures—especially around connection points and corners.

  • Clean the surface to remove algae, slime, and other debris. A build-up can make your dock dangerously slippery. Use a mild soap and a soft-bristle brush to scrub the surface.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the plastic or harm the surrounding marine life.

  • Check all hardware and moving parts (hinges, connectors, rollers, etc.) to ensure everything is in working order and securely fastened.

Keeping your modular dock clean and damage-free helps extend its life and keeps it safe for regular use.

Pull up a chair, pop open an umbrella—one for shade, and one for your drink—then sit back, relax, and enjoy your dock all summer long. You’ve earned it.
